Yarn Crawl!

So I finally decided to go ahead & give a couple more highly popular patterns a go ~ my thinking was to do them for gifts, as there are several birthdays coming up as well as the holidays.  So first up was Calorimetry.  Easy pattern, definitely had to cut down on the size.  I found this just gorgeous yarn in my stash – perfect for fall!  Um, so I fell in love with it while I knit and I’m thinking I might end up keeping this for myself.  LOL!  But seriously – look how gorgeous it is for fall:

Next up – Clapotis, of course.  Yeah, every knitter in the world has tackled this pattern except me, right?  LOL  I’m planning to make one for my sister, possibly kid-sized ones for my nieces.  We shall see, anyway.  ;)

The yarn crawl.  We started off at Needles & Knobs in St. Pete ~ always nice to browse all the lovely yarns & hang out on the couches chatting.  I ran & grabbed a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks & met everyone else up at the Alpaca farm.  YES, an alpaca farm in the heart of suburbia!  It was awesome!!  My guys were actually pretty bummed that they were gonna have to miss it, they really wanted to see the alpacas – probably a good thing they missed them, ‘cuz they’d have been begging me to take one home!  Man, those critters are so sweet and gentle!  They have the biggest eyes & will truly melt your heart.  It was a fantastic visit ~ I definitely want to go back again sometime.  Luckily, they are only 2 miles away from me, woo hoo!!  Unfortunately, I had to run to the store to pick up some machine washable yarns for the gifts planned, then get back home.  I have to work again this weekend, so I still haven’t made it up to Uncommon Threads, which I’ve heard is a fantastic yarn shop.  I also missed the visit to my own LYS, but hey, I’m there often enough!  he he he

Gnat – amazing job finding Jamie & her farm – truly awesome job on organizing the yarn crawl!!  Seriously, dude, WOW!  ;)

I have the project done for Biscotte, YAY!  I made it in time for her to ship it out with her sock club yarns.  It will be getting posted on Ravelry for the sock club folks to use for their projects.  She just *might* sell the yarn & pattern as a sock kit in her shop – I’m hoping she does because the colorway is FANTASTIC!  :D

Next up – shopping bags & Clapotis!  ;)

All has been quiet on the running front still.  These 80 hour work weeks are killing me, seriously.  *sigh*  Hopefully it will mellow out here in the next month & I’ll be able to get back on track.

After a few days to digest

I truly had not planned to post any of my reaction to the events of the past week in the political arena.  I truly hadn’t.  But then I came upon this link that someone had posted elsewhere.  I found it to be one of the most illuminating reads for me to date, actually.  I cannot thank the author enough for providing the information, links & yes, even his opinion.  :)

Emperor’s Rants & Observations

Also interesting – go back & read previous posts as well.  I think you’ll find them equally illuminating.  For example, in one from July 2007:

From where I sit it looks as Queen P was ill-prepared to take office. As I feared without any experience at the state level. It’s too bad that the people of Alaska have to suffer through her on the job training.  Perhaps the problem is that she hasn’t surrounded herself with competent people. Perhaps she is spending to much time making appearances and videos for late night TV, rather than working on the things that she was sent to do in Juneau… like being a leader, cutting the budget and making government open and transparent.

I have written & rewritten this post several times.  Putting thoughts in, taking them back out.  In the end, I’ve decided to simply put the link here – encourage you all to go read it.  Anything that I might say here is really more of a waste of time, I think – as I know full well that anything I might have to say is not going to change anyone’s mind.  Read the post, follow the links provided in it to the Alaskan newspapers articles.  Some you’ll need to get to the comments to find links via the Wayback Machine, as some of the links have beens scrubbed already.

Soooo….  on the knitting front – I’ve been getting quite a bit done this long holiday weekend, actually.  YAY!  I will say that I *am* working on a sock pattern, which is toe-up…  and I am in the process of turning the heel now.  I’ve got part of it written up, but need to finish knitting it so that I’ll have pictures for it.  It’s for Biscotte’s upcoming sock club – if you follow the Biscotte link to her Etsy shop, you’ll see her fantastic yarns.  :)

Running – still not much, the odd 3 miler here & there.  If it isn’t raining, then I get sucked into work or news stories the past few days.  tomorrow, though, I’ve got a 4 miler planned for the morning.  Hoping it isn’t raining when I wake!!

Just had to jump on the Flickr Meme bandwagon

So I had some spare time this evening & decided to go ahead & have some fun with creating my Flickr Meme. For those that haven’t seen them, they are a mosaic of pictures from Flickr.  You search your answers to these questions on Flickr – and use pictures from the first page to represent the answer.  So when I searched for “Angela”, I got a bunch of pictures of girls/women I don’t know…  but I also got some cool photos by various photographers named Angela!

1. What is your first name?
Angela

2. What is your favorite food?
Pomegranate

3. What high school did you go to?
Seminole High School (btw – I just LOVE the photo that turned up for it!)

4. What is your favorite color?
Purple

5. Who is your celebrity crush?
Alan Rickman

6. Favorite drink?
Coffee

7. Dream vacation?
Scotland

8. Favorite dessert?

9. What you want to be when you grow up?

10. What do you love most in life?
My family

11. One Word to describe you?
Quirky

12. Your flickr name?
H3Dakota, of course!

The biggest problem that I had was the last one, as my username doesn’t turn up a single image. So I used one of my own for that. ;)

1. Biella Mountains and a Sunny Field, 2. Pomme de Granada, 3. Angel – Concentration Piece, 4. Pretty in Purple Mosaic, 5. Actor, 6. Coffee and cinnamon, 7. Welcome to Scotland, 8. Carrot Cake, 9. Super-Geek!, 10. Autumn walk, 11. Who died and made you sock police?12. Me!

So – on the knitting/running/Dane front…  well, I’ve been working so damn much that I haven’t had much time for ANY of those things.  Whine, whine.  Why, you ask, did I waste time doing the Meme then?  Well, I would have gone for a run, but we had a nasty thunderstorm going on outside.  That’s ma story & I’m sticking to it!!  As far as knitting goes – I’m heading off to do just that!  Biscotte has been ever-so-patient waiting on my secret project for her, but I’ve got to get it done this weekend – more of a possibility since it IS a long weekend, woo hoo!!  ;)

Truly, nothing of interest here

I’ve been heads down working on a huge project at work, so I really don’t have any updates for ya!  How sad is that?  Nearly every waking moment has been dedicated to working this project…  running 70-80 hours a week of work for the past couple of weeks.  Much to my dismay, not to mention the kids & dogs…  I *think* I see a light at the end of the tunnel, but you know how that can be deceiving.  he he he

Running – have only managed a 2 or 3 miler here & there.

Knitting – working on a project for Biscotte, actually.  I have the design charted & am working on knitting it up in between slow loading processes on my work project.  Not my ideal environment for knitting, but I’m trying to squeeze in every bit that I possibly can!!

Ooh, on the Great Dane front – I have new pics of Leonardo, but haven’t downloaded them to the computer yet.  He climbed into the tub right in front of my son & I one day & we snapped several shots of him that turned out great.  :D

Ballband socks!

So I have been working crazy hours for the past couple of weeks – really no time at all for knitting.  It’s been really hard because the knitting helps me to destress!  *sigh*  Ah well, I know that things will lighten up at some point…  it’s just difficult to be patient sometimes!

Anyway, I finally finished up my latest pattern – YAY!  So you may know that I had recently knit up several of the ballband dishcloth pattern, I’d blogged about it a few posts back.  In the course of doing so, it dawned on me that the stitch pattern would really be fun to do for socks, too – and what a fantastic way to use up those little balls of sock yarn AND show off the lovely colors, too!  So, without further ado, I give you the Ballband Socks…

I’ve created the pattern as a PDF, finding that so much easier than rewriting the entire thing here, so here you go: Ballband Socks! Please, give a shout if you run into any trouble with the pattern!

On the running front – things haven’t been so good since my last running post.  My shin stiffened up something terrible for several days, so I forced myself to rest.  A couple of days ago, I got back out there and ran a very slow 3 miles, though.  It was a little later than I normally go, so I was able to run on the Pinellas Trail.  And who did I run into?  Woo Hoo, it was flip-flop man!  I was heading home, but I turned & ran with him for a short while to get a quick update on how he was doing.  As of Wednesday, he had logged 268 miles for the month of August.  That is in 12 days, folks, just in case you were wondering.  In flip-flops, not running shoes.  :D  He is my hero!

Not a whole lot on the Dane front lately…  though Leonardo did express his unhappiness with me over the long hours I’ve been working.  He chewed up one of my lesser favorite movies.  Still very upsetting because it is a relatively harder one to find – some day I’d like to get it on DVD, but the last time I found one, the seller was asking $150.00 for it!!  Unreal.

A very short one…

Too much work, huge project we’re trying to wrap up…  will be working all weekend long.  Gosh darnit!  Hope to squeeze in time for a run or two as well as a bit of knitting.  I’m still diligently working on the new sock pattern, one row at a time.

But the other WIP I’ve got is actually a shopping/market/grocery bag.  I got it in my head last week that I really wanted to make MYSELF one – I’ve made them for friends & family, but it’s time I made one for me too!  :)  So that’s what I’ve been working on more often than the sock.  It’s getting close to being done, so I’ll return to the sock very soon.  :)

But interestingly enough, I was just scouting other market bag patterns, well… just because.  I found another pattern that looks pretty good that I might try for upcoming gifts…  then I came across this post by Firefly – you simply must go give it a read!  She says what I wanted to say so well, there just isn’t any point in my repeating it.  She’s got a stellar project going on!

Woo Hoo!! I’m so excited, my pattern for Knit Pink is now up on the site! :D I’m adding it to my pattern page, here, of course, but here are some pics for ya…

I just love the Knit Pink site – it is fantastic! Not only what they are doing over there, but even the look/feel of the site. :) Add it to your faves!

Work is getting in the way!

Of knitting, running, reading… yeesh! So, very little knitting, no running, but I’ve been working tons of hours of unpaid overtime (the benefit of being salaried) to make up for it! <sarcasm off> I’ll be happy when this project is done, anyway.

Just a quick update for now, until I have more to report…

So an online Plurk buddy posted a link to her blog, where she has posted a request of fellow knitters. A noble cause, a worthwhile investment of time on the part of knitters – and especially for us blogging knitters. I strongly recommend any knitters to go visit her blog, read the post & see if you can find the time to send off an 8″ square. That’s it, just one small square! :)

So the only other bit of news that I’ve got… I have actually found book #2 in my life that I am utterly incapable of finishing. I have tried so many times to read Intensity by Dean Koontz – who happens to be one of my favorite authors! But I’ve never made it very far into that one, it just hasn’t grabbed me.

So what is the book that has finally unseated that one? Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Seriously. I tried to like the book. I managed to keep at it until chapter 20 or something. But I just could not bear it anymore – I only got that far because I wanted to see if it got any better. I understand that it is very popular & thousands of teenage girls the world over just love it. For the love of God, WHY?! I would not have been able to make it through even when I was a teen myself. I won’t even get into how I feel about a teenage girl that obsesses over some boy’s looks & completely gives up her free will, common sense & her own individuality just to become his girlfriend. Oh and worse than being a vampire, he’s just a downright control freak stalker.

I went online to see if I was somehow alone in my complete bafflement over the popularity of this series. I found out that I am definitely NOT alone. One of the best bits I found in my wondering was the chapter summaries at Twilight Sucks! They are hysterical – and dead on! :D

No surprises here

So I was perusing some online friends’ blogs this morning & followed a link to a short personality quiz.  It’s a very short version of a Myers-Briggs, but still fun anyway.  Mine came back the same as always, so no surprises.  It describes a bit of me rather well.  ;)

You Are An INTP

The Thinker

You are analytical and logical – and on a quest to learn everything you can.

Smart and complex, you always love a new intellectual challenge.

Your biggest pet peeve is people who slow you down with trivial chit chat.

A quiet maverick, you tend to ignore rules and authority whenever you feel like it.

In love, you are an easy person to fall for. But not an easy person to stay in love with.

Although you are quite flexible, you often come off as aloof or argumentative.

At work, you are both a logical and creative thinker. You are great at solving problems.

You would make an excellent mathematician, programmer, or professor.

How you see yourself: Creative, fair, and tough-minded.

When other people don’t get you, they see you as: arrogant, cold, and robotic.

Thanks Purly Girl, that was fun!  :)

I’m making solid progress on the new pattern, despite being completely exhausted yesterday.  I’d really love to have it done this weekend, but that’s up in the air for now, as I really have to work a good deal over the weekend (as in the real paying job!).  I still have hopes of making it across the Bay to have a visit with the knitting group across the way tomorrow, but we shall see…

Today I plan/hope to drag the youngest up to the park for another run.  My shins finally stopped feeling stiff & sore, so I think a solid 2 miles are in order.  I suppose suddenly jumping to 15 miles for the week was just too much too soon.  *sigh*  How very irksome!!!  <grrrrr>

Oh, pictures of Attila…  here we go…

This was the closest I could the two of them in one shot!

Attila by himself

Yes, the lawn had been mowed about 4 days before this picture! Damn daily summer rains, anyway.

So, I’m off to knit, run & program… LOL!
